Produced by Judd Apatow (of The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up fame) and written by Seth Rogan and Evan Goldberg, Superbad is the creation of a veritable who’s who of comedy. And the film does not disappoint. Hailed by one critic as “2007’s most successful comedy”, the movie about one night in the lives of two teenagers is viciously funny and surprising winsome, which is no doubt why one would be looking for more Movies Like Superbad.
Written by childhood buddies Rogan and Goldberg when they were just 13 years old, the film is based on their personal experience as teenagers in Vancouver during the 90s. It tells the tale of two high school seniors, named Seth and Evan after the writers, who hatch a plan to go to a party to lose their virginities before they have to leave for collage. As expected, events occur that involve copious amounts of alcohol, an effusive use of vulgarities and a steady stream of crass jokes.
But for all its gross-out humour, Superbad is, at its core, a sincere story of friendship and growing up in the terrifying time of teen hood. Beneath the constant swearing (fun fact: the f-word is spoken 186 times in the movie, or about 1.6 times per minute) lies a thoughtful script that genuinely portrays the blundering mix of adolescent foolhardiness dusted with the last remnants of childhood innocence.
If you enjoyed the film as much as we did, here are 8 Movies Like Superbad for you to delve into and remember what it was like to be young and free again.
