Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children (2016)

Seventh Son (2015)

Starring Ben Barnes, Jeff Bridges, Julianne Moore

The plot revolves around a young man named Thomas Ward who is the seventh son of a seventh son. His genealogy imbues him with unique powers and he becomes an apprentice to witch hunter Gregory. Together, they must defeat the powerful witch Malkin before she conquers all of mankind.

Slightly more grown-up in its characters and storyline than most of the other movies featured in this list of movies like Harry Potter, Seventh Son is loosely based on The Spook’s Apprentice (USA title: The Last Apprentice: Revenge of the Witch), the first novel in British a dark fantasy series. Although the film received a largely negative review for its clichéd storytelling, it nonetheless has its share of enjoyable moments. A stellar cast and impressive set design along with the requisite fantasy character lineup of shape-shifting witches, dragons and werebears makes this a fun, if slightly predictable, watch.

Eragon (2006)
